A high strength, synthetic, woven fiber material developed by DuPont and used for reinforcement in fiber-optic cables.

A sequence of random or pseudo-random binary digits used to set up (and periodically change) the operations performed in crypto-equipment for the purpose of encryption and decryption. The length of the key determines how difficult it will be to decrypt the text in a given message.

Kilobits per Second (kbit/s or kb/s)

Measurement unit to specify the speed of an Internet connection; i.e., the number of bits that can be transmitted over a wire in a single second. Most analog modem connections operate at speeds between 9.6 kbit/s (9600 bits per second) and 33.6 kbit/s (33,600 bits per second). ADSL can operate up to 8 Mbit/s (8,000,000 bits per second).

A metric unit of length equal to 1,000 meters or 0.62 miles. The kilometer is the preferred standard unit of measurement in fiber optics.

Acronym for: Key performance indicator
