Telco

The generic name for telephone companies throughout the world. The term telco encompasses RBOCs, ILECs, CLECs and PTTs.


Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA)

Accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to develop voluntary, consensus-based industry standards for a wide variety of information and communication technologies products.


Telecommunications Management Network (TMN)

A protocol model defined by ITU-T for managing open systems in a communications network. It is part of the ITU-T Recommendation series M.3000 and is based on the OSI management specifications in ITU-T Recommendation series X.700.


Telecommuting

The practice of using telecommunication technologies to facilitate work at a site away from the traditional office location and environment. Telecommuting usually involves teleconferencing and interactive, electronic communication among three or more people at two or more sites. It also includes audio only, audio and graphics, and video-conferencing.


Terminal Adapter (TA)

Used on an ISDN line, device that serves the same function as a modem on a normal analog telephone line. A terminal adapter is an external device that connects a PC or Mac to an ISDN circuit, allowing non-ISDN equipment to use ISDN.


Terminal Multiplexer (TM)

A software application that can be used to multiplex several virtual consoles, allowing a user to access multiple separate terminal sessions inside a single terminal window or remote terminal session.
