Optical fiber is being driven deeper into networks of many types. As more of a network becomes fiber-based, the specification and administration of the network’s optical technology takes on increasing importance and scale. This webcast seminar, produced by Cabling Installation & Maintenance, examines optical-fiber administration from multiple perspectives.
Presentation 1: Presentation: Connectivity for Parallel Optic Transmission
Many high-speed optical data center networks employ parallel optic transmission, through which an overall data rate is achieved by dividing that rate among multiple transmission paths. Each transmission path is supported by an optical fiber. MPO-style optical connectivity is used to facilitate this type of transmission. But not all MPO connectivity is alike. This presentation examines MPO connectivity technology, describing the different options (e.g. number of fibers) available. The presentation also provides a practical description of how MPO connectivity is used in an end-to-end optical network.
Presentation 2: The Importance of a Proper Cleave in Fiber Termination
A precision cleave is a vital step that enables low-loss fiber termination of an optical fiber. This presentation goes into detail on the tools and techniques that can ensure a proper cleave. It discusses the step-by-step process of fiber cleaving, including specific focus on the tools of the trade.
Presentation 3: Automating the Testing Process for Installed Fiber Systems
When fiber infrastructure is installed for applications such as distributed antenna systems, fiber-to-the-antenna, FTTH or others, the testing and documentation of that infrastructure is a necessary and often-complicated process. Large-scale systems such as these consume time and resources to test, and the verification of these systems becomes a project of its own—subject to delays, human error, and coordination challenges. This presentation examines the end-to-end testing process for fiber systems, with specific focus on how automation can reduce or eliminate errors throughout the process.
