Marquis Dorais, Fronthaul Product Line Manager at EXFO discusses the pressures Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are under to speed up and increase mobile network roll outs. As a result, MNOs are improving radio access networks (RANs) by quickly replacing copper with fiber base installations. Benefits of these fiber based mobile cell sites (fiber to the antenna : FTTA) include decreased power consumption, ease of installation and new capabilities for Base Band Unit (BBU) centralization (C-RAN). Nevertheless, fiber and new active equipment installed at the antenna site such as remote radio heads (RRHs) add its own set of challenges. In this short video interview, Marquis addresses the challenges and solutions that MNOs can utilize to reliably perform construction, installation and maintenance of FTTA and C-RAN based mobile networks.
