Winning the Battle of Britain
Geo Networks is the only company in the UK to focus solely on the design, build and operation of bespoke dedicated fiber network solutions. By allowing its customers to directly own and control the underlying optical fiber that is at the heart of their data network, Geo is the only truly open access network provider in the UK. It provides an extensive range of solutions including fully managed networks, dark fibre and co-location services. Geo enables network solutions in the London area and throughout the UK with onward connectivity to Ireland.
Geo already had a pretty robust 24×7 monitoring system across its high capacity fiber network, but with the continual growth of its physical infrastructure, including its new subsea cable routes between the UK and Ireland, and its commitment to delivering against its aggressive fiber fix SLAs, it decided that it was time to invest in a more sophisticated solution. EXFO’s NQMSfiber, which replaces Geo’s old remote fiber test system (RFTS), will enable Magdalene, Geo’s strategic service partner who manages the customer NOC facility, to effectively monitor and analyse Geo’s customers’ fibers as well as key dark fibers across the network. NQMSfiber allows quicker and more frequent testing, enhanced ability in determining the exact location and nature of faults and pre-emptive identification of fiber degradation.
The quality of the Magdalene network operations service is underpinned by the capabilities of the tools that its NOC engineers have at their disposal. EXFO’s NQMSfiber significantly enhances their ability to monitor, predict, prevent and react to Geo fibre network issues. This tool provides a higher level of analytic data and also integrates into Geo’s current systems. This enhances Magdalene’s service delivery performance in both preventive and reactive scenarios, having a direct positive impact on the end customer service.
Geo selected EXFO based on its professionalism, flexible approach and ability to overcome some real-life deployment challenges.
According to Jon Bradley, Vice President of Sales in the EMEA Region at EXFO: “NQMSfiber’s flexibility allows Geo to continue using its current mapping solution, but it could ‘retro-upgrade’ in the future, should it decide to move to a third-party application, thus future-proofing its system. That future-proofing and the Learning Phase (to reduce false alarms) and Reporting Tool features, give Geo statistical data for each customer in relation to its SLA performance, all proved to be major selling points in this key win for EXFO.”
